In the red earth of Tanzania’s Nyarugusu open-pit mine, women toil daily with basic tools to extract tiny amounts of gold. Yet stacks of gleaming gold bars in distant vaults in Europe and North America tell a different story. Despite possessing some of the world’s richest gold reserves, the continent captures little of the value as raw gold is exported for refining, enriching Western and Eastern powers. This is Africa’s Gold Problem.
